Just been given this edition of Munro's tales as a Christmas present - what a treat! Delightful reading for anyone, though.
I read a lot of these stories some twenty years ago as a callow youth, I enjoyed them then but having now dipped into them again as a man of 'a certain age' I find them even more of a hoot. Based around a small Puffer (small coastal flat bottom boat) that transports anything from coal to animals etc, etc mainly from the Scottish mainland to the the Islands and and ports around the west coast. ), Dan McPhail the engineer and Sunny Jim the deck hand, who lives up to his name in name only! Neil Munro's tales of the crew of the 'on-its-last-legs' boat "The Vital Spark" sees Para Handy, the skipper, (if I remember rightly 'Para Handy' is the Gaelic name for the skipper, Peter) and his crew of Dougie the first mate (a man who puts the super into superstitious"! Loved the characters, the dialect, the " high jeenks".
The humour is wry rather than laugh out loud, but the cumulative effect is most enjoyable. They evoke the long-gone world of the Clyde steamers and the men who sailed them. as the skipper would say. On the ground floor of one such traditional building, with the added advantage of being right on the loch front, is Para Handy Cottage, a snug and charming holiday home, which has been cunningly renovated to create a delightful sense of space.
