Historians believe that the march achieved little of concrete value at the time but ‘did, however, shape the post-war perceptions of the 1930s and ensured the attachment of the word “Hungry” to the 1930s in the popular mind’. Where formerly 8,000 people, many of them skilled workers, were employed, only 100 men are now employed on a temporary scheme. Historically part of County Durham, in 1974 it became part of the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear.. The marchers aimed to arrive in Westminster at the opening of Parliament, where they would present a petition signed by 12,000 residents of Jarrow.
