Its first thirty pages or so ticked me off something fierce, with its snide caricature of a Brody-resembling film critic. Adds to oeuvre perfectly. This is such a fascinating reading experience because, as you trudge through all 700+ pages, you’re actively watching a writer, who was obviously winging it from beginning to end and making it up as he went along, run out of ideas.

There's a lot going on in this novel, which probably has the most going on of any book I've read this year, but in the end, it might be about how writing can be bad for you.Rather too much of a good thing.

This is not an easy read.

I guess it's like some of the modern art that the critics love and ordinary folks just shake their heads at, wondering what all the fuss was about.

He only watched foreign filmmmmmsuh? Remember the fingerquotes "approval of the masses" character on Mr. Show? “Antkind is Kaufman pushing himself to every formal and social limit, no holds barred, bleak and devastating, yet marvelous.”—Los Angeles Review of Books “This is a whopper of a book, bursting with the driest of humor, the strangest of scenarios, and the most brilliant of observations. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. I genuinely loved the first hundred or so pages despite some uncomfortable jokes about gender that your young-people-today-are-too-sensitive uncle would make (which don’t really slow down until 600ish pages in), but as it goes I didn’t finish this book, I escaped it. I genuinely loved the first hundred or so pages despite some uncomfortable jokes about gender that your young-people-today-are-too-sensitive uncle would make (which don’t really slow down until 600ish pages in), but as it goes on it feels like the book gradually falls apart until it fully becomes a Trump-joke-fueled death march to the end.

But the protagonist's resemblance to any real-life figure is a kind of red herring. An ordeal.I think I just read something brilliant, but it was so drawn out it lost some of its sparkle. Imagine a Kaufman movie feee of budgetary constraints and box office expectations.hard to review or describe for a huge number of reasons, but the easiest way to try is to say Kaufman basically wrote a 700-page satire of white male liberalism. February 6th 2020 By the end it’s well past the point of humor and into just throwing Robot Trump jokes at a wall and seeing what it sticks. ), but readers who enjoy satire or surrealism or dark humor will enjoy it as well. This is not an easy read. In most cases, the reviews are necessarily limited to those that were available to us ahead of publication. You might call this book BEING CHARLIE KAUFMAN, and it will depend on your predilection for his particular kind of writing whether you enjoy ANTKIND. Did I mention it’s just plain fun?

It’s the Christopher Nolan of coffee.”“There are rumors of rats down here as big as German shepherds, the people not the dogs.”

This is not any "a clef" novel. Often regarded as one of the finest screenwriters of the 21st century, his work explores themes of death, insecurity, the artistic process, and the passage of time.Charles Stuart Kaufman is an American playwright, film producer, theater and film director, and an Academy Award, BAFTA, and Independent Spirit Award-winning screenwriter.

You will either find him funny or very tedious.

This debut novel from the award-winning screenwriter of movie masterpieces such as Being John Malkovich and Synecdoche, New York, is funny, exhausting and very, very long.Reading it is like watching (or being) someone trying to sprint to the top of an Escher staircase. It’s a TON of fun.

It's highbrow AND lowbrow.

Let us know what’s wrong with this preview of It is. . You can do it all.

Not a chance, actually. a dyspeptic satire that owes much to Kurt Vonnegut and Thomas Pynchon .

One thing I really like is how Kaufman is able to drop in all kinds of erudite references but still be just damn funny/entertaining.

A Pynchon-for-the-layman, with a pinch David-Foster-Wallace's-humor Kafkaesque nightmare. Unfortunately all that remains of it is a single frame of film, and that is the starting point of his journey.
