First time I saw this, before I knew who Leonardo was I actually thought he was a mentally ill person playing the part. Johnny Depp, him again, gives yet another excellent performance as Gilbert, frustrated with his lot, wishing he could get away from his family, responsibilities and most of all Endora. Movies in which the only point is to feel bad for the characters.

As per my mother's rule, one had to read the book before viewing the movie so I read the story of the Grape family before venturing to watch the film starring Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio. Reilly, a young and incredible Leonardo DiCaprio, Juliette Lewis, and many relatively unknown others who give this movie tremendous depth. There are no stunning visual effects, no mind-blowing stunt-work and even the film setting is somewhat dull and lifeless. The realistic depiction of marginalized characters overcoming grief and accepting disabilities is what makes this film timeless. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a compelling if a sometimes slow narrative.Quirky drama with good performances and a quite compelling story. | This movie is stunning in many aspects, and it creates a world that is anything but unbelievable. What's eating Gilbert Grape is now one of my most treasured reads.It's written with such humanity that you can relate to the feelings and thoughts of Gilbert and the other characters.Gilbert is living in a remote town called Endora in Iowa with his family and he seems bored.He tells us about life in Endora and how his life suddenly changes when a strange girl comes travelling through the town.
