Nobody is hurt, but the impact is felt for decades. Would definitely be a good book club book.Imbi Neeme has crafted a clear-eyed, compassionate novel with crackling dialogue and endearing characters struggling to put together the fragments of a misremembered past.It is extremely snappily written. The characters are self consciously not always easy to like, but there is something very tender in Neeme's representations of these flawed people in regard to what has damaged them, and how, and what it might take to make them whole again. The novel switches time frames so often that it is difficult to keep the timeline of events straight in your mind - this writing technique was thoroughly overused and it’s impact rendered redundant. In 1982, a car overturns on a remote West Australian road. The talk however turned me off - the author came over very egotistical and told us far too often how many times she had presented the talk. Nicole, after years of aimless drifting, has finally found love, and yet can’t quite commit.

Sadly they do anyway - and cost wildlife their lives. 1760893765 ‘The Spill’ is a compelling look at sisterhood and more broadly at family - the expectations we put on those closest to us, the easy disappointments, the fervent want to be better and more whole for each other. The characters are fleshed out so well you could almost imagine yourself walking along side them as the story unfolds. These are people, like us, making lives of their messes. This compelling, beautifully crafted story introduces us to a pair of sisters, and then peels back the layers of their history to reveal the complexities and contradictions at the heart of love. (I swear I’m not grumpy about my husband forcing me to go camping. This event unwittingly shapes their lives. Add in the fact it’s set in Perth and WA and this is up there as my top read for the year. I finished this savouring the last chapters with tears running down my face. 'This was a great book about the bonds of family and the effect of secrets and alcoholism. I've finished my second read and ahhh, do I love me a re-read of a non-linear book. It follows two sisters– uptight, control-freak Samantha, and her older sister, Nicole, who has always felt that putting herself first is something she needs to feel guilty about. The impact of time, memory, misunderstanding, secre And I was invested.

I decided to read this book after hearing the author speak about the book.

Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. Winner of the 2019 Penguin Literary Prize for an Unpublished Manuscript, The Spill tells the story of a car crash on a highway between Hyden and Kalgoorlie in 1982, and the aftermath of this event. A story of two sisters; on the surface, it may not seem all that spectacular. There is some obvious talent here as a writer. It was to my mind flimsily built, much like the tent I’ve slept in the last two nights. I must have read a different novel to the one so highly rated in Goodreads.

At first, the flashbacks seem random; there is no chronological order to them and sometimes it is Nicole’s flashback, while at others it is Samantha’s. I thought the flow of the story was fantastic & the characters really well developed. It is only after Tina’s death, almost four decades later, that the sisters are forced to reckon with the repercussions of the crash. Choose The Spill for your next book club meet-up and discover a new literary talent. A good story well told, & a great debut from the author.

Perfect for those who love the domestic dramas of Liane Moriarty or Alice Munro.A warm, deftly observed multi-narrative about the inherent messiness of life and relationships.Imbi Neeme’s accomplished and coherent sister-gate, exposes the bond and the cause of friction between the siblings as these flawed, troubled and likeable women track their ‘missing pieces.’ The book’s engaging cast sing convincingly on the page. She was also the recipient of the 2019 Henry Handel Richardson Fellowship at Varuna for excellence in Short Story Writing.

It dealt with the complicated relationships and differing sibling memories and the ripple effects over the years so very well. As a strolled into the library one day to collect a loan that was on hold I spotted the fresh cover on the shelves and nabbed. Not one bit.) Her ...In 1982, a car overturns on a remote West Australian road. There is a law boats are not allowed to dump into the water closer than 100 miles off shore. It’s take you by the hands, sit back, you’re gonna be told a story and it’s going to entertain you. The dysfunction of this family was saddening: parents Craig and Tina, daughters Samantha and Nicole, the subsequent wives of Craig after his separation, the partners and husbands of the adult sisters – they were all players in the traumas that characterised the years 1982-2018.A great read, that brought to life the experience of growing up in Perth. This book LIVES. A good story well told, & a great debut from the author. The way the story moves through different aspects of time, all whilst revealing more about the present day story was incredibly clever, and kept me hooked until the very last page. You’ll have to judge for yourself, and then tell me I’m obtuse. The premise and the plot are fine and interesting but I hated the structure of jumping all over the place in time and the switches between third and first person. Imbi Neeme's The Spill is a taut and deftly written tale of the ongoing repercussions caused by events and decisions made in the past and the ways that they continue to spill into future events and relationships. The dysfunction of this family was saddening: parents Craig and Tina, daughters Samantha and Nicole, the subsequent wives of Craig after his separation,I must have read a different novel to the one so highly rated in Goodreads. My first re-read through I was simply absorbing the story - it's such an immersive book that I didn't notice I was reading it. I persevered, continued reading with hope that it would improve. The fickle finger of memory plays into the hand of fiction figuratively and metaphorically in Neeme’s assured hands. I don’t give out my 5 stars easily. Nobody is hurt, but the impact is felt for decades. In 1982, a car overturns on a remote road. I especially loved Tina, Samantha and Nicole from the beginning. A wonderful read. I gave this one 3.5 out of 5 calls from 1952 wanting its gender inequality back.
